What is Social Networking?
Social computing has emerged as a broad area of research in Human Computer Interactions and Computer Supported Collaborative Work, encompassing systems that gather, store, process, re-present, and disseminate social information that is distributed across social collectivities such as teams, communities, organizations, cohorts, populations, and markets.

Bios
Rebecca Brown Becky joined Intel in 1992 and brings over 18 years of experience in sales, marketing, and product development. As the Director of Social Media, Becky is responsible for the global strategy, framework, and tools to enable and measure world class social activations plans across all parts of the organization (business units, marketing team, geography teams). For a short period of 18 months Becky worked at Adobe managing the campaign planning and strategy for the Adobe Flash Platform. Becky began her career in sales as a technical marketing engineer and held a variety of customer facing roles such as Field Sales Engineer, Retail Marketing Manager, Market Development Management. Following sales, she spent over 5 years in product marketing and development for two strategically important and revolutionary products from Intel. Angela LoSasso is Global Social Media Strategist for HP’s Imaging and Printing Group. In this role, Angela collaborates with HP’s executives, digital strategists, customers and fans to extend HP’s brand, technology and service leadership into thriving social and digital experiences.�Angela has specialized in digital and social strategy for more than a decade. Prior to joining HP, she contributed to the successful launches of digital brands such as Netflix, where she was the Director of Editorial, and CNET, where Angela was the Executive Editor of Reviews. Angela began her career as a journalist, including stints with the Los Angeles Times and Entrepreneur Magazine. Cathy Lasser is Vice President and CTO for the Distribution Sector of the IBM Sales & Distribution division. Her role is to leverage IBM’s technical community to bring value to clients in the retail, consumer products and travel and transportation industries. She was previously Vice President, Industry Solutions and Emerging Business for the Research division, and responsible for connecting research with all industries to focus innovation on the application of technology to real-world problems. Her new mission is to continue the linkage with the research community and to facilitate getting the leading technologies and solutions into the market quickly. She began her career with IBM in 1978 as a programmer. Cathy is also an executive member for the Women in Technology for the corporation. Cathy holds a BS in Mathematics/Computer Science from SUNY Binghamton and an MBA in Finance from Iona College.
Joann J. Ordille is a consulting research scientist in the Multimedia Technologies Research Department of Avaya Labs. Her research focuses on enabling businesses to respond quickly to customer concerns as expressed on social networking and other websites. She has successfully transferred her research into products. Joann was an early innovator in making it easier to search, integrate and use information on the Internet for which she received, amongst others, the "VLDB 2006 10 Year Best Paper Award." Joann previously worked at Bell Labs, and received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Meredith Ringel Morris is a research scientist in the Adaptive Systems & Interaction group at Microsoft Research. She is also an affiliate assistant professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. Dr. Morris’s research area is human-computer interaction, with a particular emphasis on computer-supported cooperative work and social computing. She has published numerous technical articles and patents on multi-user interactive systems, and recently co-authored the book Collaborative Web Search: Who, What, Where, When, and Why? (Morgan & Claypool, 2010). Dr. Morris served as the co-chair of the technical program for CHI 2009, the ACM’s premier conference on the topic of human-computer interaction. She was named one of 2008’s 35 Innovators Under 35 by Technology Review, and one of 2009’s 100 Notable Women in Seattle Technology by TechFlash. Dr. Morris earned a Ph.D. and M.S. in computer science from Stanford University, and an Sc.B. in computer science from Brown University.
Jennifer El is a Principal Program Manager for Symantec Corporation. She started her career at Symantec in 1998 as a Software Quality Assurance Analyst on the Enterprise Products. She moved to the Consumer division in 2006 where she managed the QA effort for Norton Internet Security, Norton Antivirus and Norton 360. She is currently working on a new product line for Norton designed to integrate management and membership for Norton customers. She serves as co-champion of the Culver City chapter of the Symantec Women’s Action Network. Jennifer holds a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from University of California at Los Angeles.
