Storytelling as Role Modeling: Collecting Oral Histories

Note: This session was a participative workshop to collect feedback on storytelling as role modeling project. Workshop was recorded and can be best experienced in video recording.

The project is supported by SIG CSE, ACM-Women, National center for women in IT and NSF.

Vision of the project:

o Create searchable repository of artifacts, including digital audio interviews, transcripts, photographs, vitas and other relevant items
o Target audience is – A balanced collection across factors such as gender, geographic location, age, race/ethnicity, institutional size and focus
o Support, recruit and retain underrepresented groups

Searchable Probing questions:

o Parent’s education
o Early education
o Siblings
o Other shaping influences
o Undergraduate education
o Interruptions
o Challenges
o Career phase connection
o Compromises
o Outside interest

Stories:

Group was given three stories –

o Story of Judith Gal-Ezer from Israel
o Story of Alison Young from New Zealand
o Story of Beth Simon from San Diego, CA
