Kristin Lauter, Microsoft Research Center International experience helps. Do it when you are young. For example, before you start your family. Otherwise you have to face the two-body problem. It is hard for a family (specially with kids) to relocated.

Meichun Hsu, HP labs, China The activities in HP can be viewed as delivery, development and research. Delivery of current product & service requires immidiate attention. Development of next generation products takes about 0.5 to 2 years. Research takes about 3 to 15 years (e.g. nanotechnology). The delivery is closer to the market and custmers.
