Making the Most of Your Seat at the Table

The game changes as you move up the career ladder — great tactics can get you more responsibility, but a great strategy can increase your circle of influence and your reputation.

Nilofer Merchant, CEO of Rubicon Consulting, talked during a special lunch at GHC on Friday. She gave attendees five things to do differently now that they've arrived at the table. Highly technical, academic, and business-oriented all learned skills to help them see and be seen in a new way.

These were the talking points:

  • See your job, your role, and the big picture with clarity in a factual, unbounded way.
  • Approach change openly and become generative listeners.
  • Understand how decision making works and the value of incorporating uncertainty in it.
  • How to live your values.
  • And, why your EQ (or emotional intelligence) can be as important as your IQ.

Rubicon Consulting is known for its work on complex, high-tech business problems — launching new products, defining new markets, and fighting off massive competitors. Visit this page to learn more about Nilofer Merchant.
