Resources for LGBT Technical Women
Here are a few resources pulled together as part of our GHC08 BOF preparation. We intend it to be an ongoing resource after the conference. Most are not specific to LGBT technical women, but rather focus on LGBT community issues. What other resources do you know of for LGBT technical women? Please feel free to add them and to revise the descriptions here as needed.
Catalyst Studies
Making Change: LGBT Inclusion—Understanding the Challenges outlines the business case for LGBT inclusion and provides an in-depth analysis of the challenges that LGBT employees face in the workplace.
Making Change: LGBT Inclusion—Implementing Policies, Programs, and Practices offers strategies to lay a foundation for LGBT inclusion, discusses ways to involve all employees, and outlines steps for integrating accountability.
LGBT Listserv for Technical Women
The LGBT list is an international email listserv for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender technical women. The list was created after a GHC 2006 LGBT BoF session, and seeks to provide an area for collaboration where we can share experiences, resources, and a place to connect with one another.
Human Rights Campaign (HRC)
HRC works to achieve full civil rights for GLBT Americans. The Workplace Issues section of their website includes information on workplace laws and pending legislation. Their annual Corporate Equality Index analyzes and rates large U.S. employers and their policies and practices relevant to GLBT employees, consumers and investors.
National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals (NOGLSTP)
NOGLSTP is a member-based organization. Their website includes lists of contacts for GLBTA employee resource groups at various employers, other vertical and regional Technoqueer orgs, regional groups, and more.
National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR)
NCLR works to advance the civil and human rights of LGBT people through litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education. Their website includes a section on Employment Issues & Cases and they also offer Legal Help.
Out and Equal Workplace Advocates
Out and Equal offers workplace resources, training programs, and holds an annual summit that brings together LGBT employees and HR professionals. Earlier this year they launched the Out and Equal online network for LGBT professionals.
Out for Work
Out for Work programs are designed to help LGBT college students transition from academia to the workplace. They have a job list and publish a list of inclusively-minding hiring companies (you'll need to enter your email address), and offer workshops on how to find and get an LGBT-friendly job.
