Notes

Intro

Carol Bartz is one of 2 women ceos in fortune 500 companies. She brought prepared remarks but is not going to use them. She was SO inspired there were only 2 women when she did CS. She saw the excitement and is in awe. She knew Anita and Anita is the most viable reasons that we are all here tonight we honor her by being here and by perservering.

In 1967 Carol programmed an ibm 1620 paper tape toggling boot wrap wire wrap and fell in love. Her first computer program was to add up the total of all the possible license combinations a simple do loop in fortran. We are honoring grace hopper. She has been in technology for 40 yrs.

Things have changed so much even the way things were thought about. 600 million people come to Yahoo from around the world and they serve up 100 billion emails a month 18 billion adds a day. We can all change the world because of what we are doing because of what you are doing. We think about it from more than the cs point of view how is it effecting our world. Finally with this complex feeling of technology women are going to talk the lead. not just making money not just awards.

There is no greater good.

Reach back we all have a job here.

Career advise

First

really learn how to embrace change. You might think you automatically embrace change but this is not in our natural nature. We can really make change happen. Dont get stuck, make yourself get uncomfortable dont settle for status quo. Easy to be in rolls and not speak up and not be contrarians and not let our stars shine. We have to shine our stars we have to stand up for our selves some times you have to be a BIOTCH. (daughter taught her that) she taughter her daughter BIOTCH WINGS.

2nd you are in charge of your career nobody but you and your mom actually give a ____ . Everyone else cares about themselves. BE A LEADER dont wait for a mentor to come along. There are people you can look up to you can respect you can learn from everybody a two year old a politician watch and listen and be open either i wouldnt do that or id like to be that.

Dont think of your career about a ladder thing about it as a pyramid. (ladders are unstable.)

You dont have to be a ceo its not actually the greatest job in the world.

Students given that you are on average 20 yrs old you have about 50 years to work. Follow your passion. Worry about making a difference doing a good job ...

Don't miss out ona family. Nothing you are doing is as important as a family everything else she was 40 before she had her daughter and she wishes she had done it earlier. Don't give up on family.
